Syllabus & Exam Pattern
📝 Selection Process Overview
📚 Stage I: Academic Shortlisting
Before the interview, applications are shortlisted purely based on academic performance.
Normalization: Marks from the qualifying degree are normalized using a formula on the Indian Navy website .
Semester Consideration: For BE/B.Tech candidates, performance up to the 5th semester is used for shortlisting .
🗓️ Stage II: The 5-Day SSB Interview (The Real "Exam")
This is the core of the selection process. It is a 5-day assessment designed to evaluate personality, leadership, and decision-making skills . The schedule is as follows :
Day 0 (Reporting): Document verification and allocation of chest numbers .
Day 1: Screening Test (Stage I)
Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test: A time-bound test with verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions to assess basic intelligence .
Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT): A picture (often hazy) is shown for 30 seconds, and you must write a story based on it within a time limit. This is followed by a group discussion on the stories. This is a crucial elimination stage .
Day 2: Psychological Tests (Stage II)
These written tests are administered by a psychologist to evaluate your subconscious personality traits .
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): 12 clear pictures (including one blank) are shown for 30 seconds each, and you must write a story for each, projecting your thoughts and problem-solving ability .
Word Association Test (WAT): 60 words are shown for 15 seconds each. For every word, you must write the first thought that comes to your mind .
Situation Reaction Test (SRT): You are given a booklet of 60 real-life situations and asked to write your immediate reaction within a time limit .
Self Description Test (SDT): You write about yourself based on your parents', teachers', and friends' perspectives, and your own self-view .
Days 3 & 4: Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks & Personal Interview
GTO Tasks: These are outdoor and group tasks that test your teamwork, leadership, initiative, and physical and mental stamina .
Group Discussion (GD)
Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
Progressive Group Task (PGT) & Half Group Task (HGT)
Individual Obstacle Task (IOT)
Command Task & Final Group Task (FGT)
Lecturette
Personal Interview: A one-on-one interview with a senior officer, based on your background, academics, hobbies, motivations, and general knowledge .
Day 5: Conference
A final board review where a panel (including the Psychologist, GTO, and IO) discusses your performance. You have a brief conversation with the panel. This is the last assessment point before final recommendations are made .
🩺 Stage III: Medical Examination
Candidates recommended after the Conference undergo an intensive medical examination at a military hospital to confirm fitness for naval service .
📖 "Syllabus" for the SSB Interview
Since there is no written exam, the "syllabus" is the broad range of personal qualities and knowledge assessed during the SSB process .
Knowledge Domains:
General Awareness: Current affairs, national and international events, defense news, and government policies .
Navy-Specific Knowledge: General awareness of the Indian Navy, its history, operations, and current affairs .
Technical Knowledge: Understanding of engineering and naval concepts based on your specialization .
Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability: Assessed via OIR and GTO tasks .
Personality Attributes (Officer Like Qualities):
Leadership & Teamwork: Initiative, responsibility, and ability to work in and lead a team .
Decision-Making: Speed and clarity of thought under pressure .
Psychological Assessment: Positive attitude, adaptability, emotional stability, and honesty .
