1. Preliminary Examination Pattern
This is an online objective test designed to screen candidates for the Mains exam. The marks obtained in the Prelims are not counted towards the final selection .

Format: It tests the ability to read, write, and speak the language .

Nationality: Must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India .
Age Relaxation: Eligible candidates from reserved categories are entitled to age relaxation. For example, SC/ST candidates get 5 years, OBC candidates get 3 years, and PwBD candidates get 10-15 years depending on the category .
Other Requirements: Candidates must have knowledge of word processing on a computer and be proficient in the local language of the state or region they are applying for .
